He is one of the smartest people we have met and he knows a thing or two about how <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">today's</span> communications tools change the world. We cannot recommend his book<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1594201536"> "Here comes everybody"</a> enough. <span style="font-style: italic;"> (We are also happy that Clay has managed to secure strong marketing support from Amazon, not only maintaining his high sales ranking and a very competitive price versus <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">BN</span>.com).</span><br /><br />In a loving and <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4">supportive</span> way, we have to respectfully disagree with the conclusions that Clay <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_5">Shirky</span> comes to in his recent post on "The failure of #<span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_6">amazonfail</span>".<br />Clay, like us, was early to the #<span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_7">amazonfail</span> #<span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_8">amazonrank</span> twitter conversation, likely <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_9">alerted</span> by the same initial post by @<span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_10">scobleizer</span> (Robert <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_11">Scoble</span>). Clay describes what many of us felt...the "emotional pleasure" and "intoxication" of the <a href="http://www.roughtype.com/archives/2009/04/hashmobs.php">#<span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_12">hashmob</span> </a>(thanks Nicolas Carr).<br /><br />Having read much of the aftermath there seem to be two conclusions that most people come to in this debate:<br /><br />a) Amazon was wrong/ stupid/ failed because they had all the wrong checks and balances but were not fundamentally LGBT biased and we all acted like a rampant lynch mob. (my take on Clay's conclusions)<br /><br />or<br /><br />b) Amazon's <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_13">algorithm</span> was created by the company and a built in LGBT bias shows a systemic bias within the organization. Even when alerted by authors and publishers of this fact, their reply was <a href="http://markprobst.livejournal.com/15293.html">'gay = adult, so suck it up!'</a> which reinforces the fact that the LGBT bias is systemic within Amazon. <span style="text-decoration: underline;">(my take on </span><a href="http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/04/14/guest-post-why-amazon-didnt-just-have-a-glitch/">Mary <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_14">Hodder's</span></a> take).<br /><br />I want to offer up an alternative conclusion why we all felt intoxicated and good about this event. This has nothing to do with why the #amazonfail happened but everything to do with what it achieved.<br /><br />Firstly, the community identified the problem and in #<span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_15">amazonfail</span> saw a way to increase awareness of the problem that would elevate it beyond the lowly person in the customer service who could not see the importance of this issue. Such gatekeepers in hierarchical management systems are increasingly irrelevant as we can speak for ourselves to the people that matter and if unsatisfied with the result can elevate it to a higher authority without their permission or supervisor!<br /><br />Secondly, what was intoxicating was the shared mission of righting an obvious wrong. The conclusions of most commentators tend to focus on how successful we were in righting the 'wrong' that caused of the problem - LGBT bias within Amazon or a bad algorithm/french programmer. However, the real 'wrong' in this case was not the cause of the problem but the <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_16">consequence</span> of the problem and we were very successful in overturning that - restoring the representation, profile, livelihood and income of LGBT writers and publishers. I think there is good evidence that this is what mobilized us into action and turned a simple blog post by <a href="http://markprobst.livejournal.com/15293.html">Mark R Probst</a> into a movement. <br /><br />Most of the initial blogs that picked up on the story did not focus on why this was happening but simply built up an impressive body of evidence that there was indeed a problem. <br /><br />Many of the active participants not only joined petitions but identified people who could help e.g. @werner the CTO of Amazon for example, received many supportive emails alerting him to the problem. Authors and publishers reached out to their contacts, not only to make a stink but to bring this to the attention of the leaders of the company as lower down communications systems had obviously failed.<br /><br />We cannot know all of the motivations of the individuals who joined in #amazonfail, just like we will never know the motivations of Amazon for developing such an algorithm or responding to authors the way they did. What we do know is that with the help of "read/write" technology the community identified the problem fast, verified the existance of the problem, mobilized to let other interested parties know the problem, contacted people who could fix the problem and within a period of 24 hours had the solution in hand and being fixed by the people who owned the problem. That is what felt good. This was not a lynch mob.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7233315343481926513.post-90327844995658492172009-04-12T20:27:00.000-07:002009-04-12T20:42:48.884-07:00#glitchmyass<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5z1OHr-NgZvQClHuxdrVqNDxyeQ32HNEXjqJrcr0lblKRRGUyGOnc8bp7_2BNvcrJHsz44-b_m4C8X9Jp48_mE1mAVWGIZJujOGVAX-Qgndp76HNqUFzmaAQkMasyFqbHBlkSBMGFCYVS/s1600-h/arse.png"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 196px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5z1OHr-NgZvQClHuxdrVqNDxyeQ32HNEXjqJrcr0lblKRRGUyGOnc8bp7_2BNvcrJHsz44-b_m4C8X9Jp48_mE1mAVWGIZJujOGVAX-Qgndp76HNqUFzmaAQkMasyFqbHBlkSBMGFCYVS/s200/arse.png" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5324014001524544802" border="0" /></a><span style="font-weight: bold;">Update:</span> Amazon's Director of Corporate Communications, Patty Smith (who has probably had one hell of an Easter Sunday) is quoted in Associated press that <a href="http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5iFAIOIDnSsgrsaXKgoEH9kaWAmlwD97HAGUO1">"there was a glitch in our system"</a>. The Twitterverse is all ready judging that response with the hashtag: <a href="http://search.twitter.com/search?q=%23glitchmyass">#glitchmyass</a>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7233315343481926513.post-44726993640743854742009-04-12T13:35:00.000-07:002009-04-12T16:06:29.498-07:00Amazon hides gay books from their recommendations<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXclDRqo2vHpve1u9Vvg8q5IviZV7DekytkyJTlXz2db-v90Cv69lBdtMjOWl7eGTCciIPDaT6a8upm_XilFIy-eKXEUWb7exba7o3zlunWHMkY60W2k0Qshyphenhyphenq4kTNn63SRq6AVBm9kqtM/s1600-h/Picture+8.png"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 165px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXclDRqo2vHpve1u9Vvg8q5IviZV7DekytkyJTlXz2db-v90Cv69lBdtMjOWl7eGTCciIPDaT6a8upm_XilFIy-eKXEUWb7exba7o3zlunWHMkY60W2k0Qshyphenhyphenq4kTNn63SRq6AVBm9kqtM/s200/Picture+8.png" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5323909324472176338" border="0" /></a>There is a rather worrying story going round that Amazon is removing the work of gay authors from their recommendations.<br />In a <a href="http://markprobst.livejournal.com/15293.html">blog post </a>by <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0979777305/ref=cm_pdp_arms_dp_1">Mark R Probst</a> it seems that Amazon is admitting that they removed a lot of gay literature from their sales ranking. It seems to be a concerted effort to remove many gay best sellers from their lists rather than a disgruntled author, disappointed that his book has been classified as adult.<br /><br />Amazon is taking the stance that anything with a "gay" or "lesbian" themes is 'adult' and stripping them of their sales rankings which results in not be promoted by them in their best sellers list. This includes many gay classics and even gay romantic novels. Despite this heterosexual literature such as: <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Playboy-Complete-Centerfolds-Chronicle-Books/dp/0811860914">Playboy centerfolds</a>, Jackie Collins and Harold Robbins remain actively promoted and keep their rankings.<br /><br />If you read the comments on Mark's blog there are many followers of this story who have investigated fully and it seems to be an active anti-gay bias....to action!<br /><br />Twitter #hashtags: #amazonfailUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7233315343481926513.post-3004207041404951522009-03-31T05:22:00.000-07:002009-03-31T05:27:42.245-07:00Is it Gay?<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYQFlguSg0PmPQjia5V-QrDqUx7zqkOiAzRuHL8DgP3jjxZE3aGM6faba5XrdYbq9wA7lsYDelOFWPAAQXbSQdbOtBh5ivBVlhxt_r-iik99tPl-WaEyVrskNev3wWP0de7oZUjsMGDlpD/s1600-h/0326_tesla_s.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 119px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYQFlguSg0PmPQjia5V-QrDqUx7zqkOiAzRuHL8DgP3jjxZE3aGM6faba5XrdYbq9wA7lsYDelOFWPAAQXbSQdbOtBh5ivBVlhxt_r-iik99tPl-WaEyVrskNev3wWP0de7oZUjsMGDlpD/s200/0326_tesla_s.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5319326697005638738" border="0" /></a>Geeky but is it gay?<br />Video on You tube of the first test drive of the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8YN3MAHmhY">Tesla Electric</a> car.<br />Touch screen dash , 300 mile range, 120 MPH, 1-60 in 5.6 seconds.<br />Yours for just $49,900 (basic model)Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7233315343481926513.post-18872984766396575122009-03-29T15:36:00.001-07:002009-03-31T05:28:30.708-07:00Damp men with great shoulders and thighs<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdISbARPg9d03VB-OWDrol12-UobLOiETRBpfEzrUB5h9DX4QM2q9GI7tydVImMXJg9ZP99uoAJZhDByCP30X6XEJ6UTxoz05OhKXWrMyHQKpFnOOYmGMrx4JnehOm0pI5ChnbDW8B5myY/s1600-h/Picture+5.png"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 122px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdISbARPg9d03VB-OWDrol12-UobLOiETRBpfEzrUB5h9DX4QM2q9GI7tydVImMXJg9ZP99uoAJZhDByCP30X6XEJ6UTxoz05OhKXWrMyHQKpFnOOYmGMrx4JnehOm0pI5ChnbDW8B5myY/s200/Picture+5.png" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5318745200019370722" border="0" /></a>How did I miss that it was the <a href="http://www.theboatrace.org/gallery/2009/2009+Race+Day#">155th Oxford/Cambridge boat race</a> today. Put me in mind of lighting solutions for the summer. I've seen some wonderful moonlighting effects from lights hung high in trees, above the lower branches, that create a blueish dappled, moonlight effect. Seems this range of solar powered lamps from IKEA could do much the same and a fraction of the price. I only wish you could buy them online, rather than having to go to the goddamn store.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7233315343481926513.post-69591328597969774492009-03-25T04:12:00.000-07:002009-03-25T04:18:01.624-07:00We have the power - Woz DWTS<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAsCKtSI0985zIOiv4-1Alsr_9davxLJyqDYuBD01Qyqp3boveJWAHAQvyXcMet2AYHLDyVRuAL02xkjadFGTTb0pmaSjfaK5qLnqWAKBWLPaI0uL3qoF3h4MVGLv3SSuCnDeaECcmOW39/s1600-h/ALeqM5gjND-Oqfc5wYDtYRd9Ab1-nFSXWQ.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 186px; height: 186px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAsCKtSI0985zIOiv4-1Alsr_9davxLJyqDYuBD01Qyqp3boveJWAHAQvyXcMet2AYHLDyVRuAL02xkjadFGTTb0pmaSjfaK5qLnqWAKBWLPaI0uL3qoF3h4MVGLv3SSuCnDeaECcmOW39/s200/ALeqM5gjND-Oqfc5wYDtYRd9Ab1-nFSXWQ.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5317082126962698050" border="0" /></a><span style="font-weight: bold;"><a href="http://www.cnn.com/2009/TECH/03/24/wozniak.dancing.stars/?iref=mpstoryview">The geeks keep Woz dancing with the stars</a><br /></span><span>Who would have thought that Woz could stay on DWTS with only 10 points out of a possible 30. Got me thinking, where could the Gays go? Where could we create the perfect vacation destination/permanant gay friendly community. After all, we have a proven history of raising real estate prices in any area.<br /><br />My best suggestions are: Florida, Arizona, Vegas or even Merced County, CA. Seems there was a lot of building there and a lot of empty lots that could be converted into something interesting.<br /><br />Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7233315343481926513.post-69782867940954454992009-03-22T10:36:00.000-07:002009-03-22T11:38:54.783-07:00We <3 Tom<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhONsdzT0l5IRjCzTvdzGPWKDEEDU5pHW9ekLqh1fIdt7_BFMg0b6t37vn6ZGJmFms3o9RlsirAf9cty_d9yjgkS3qrpMntekcYRcbi4n8YXXnT2NBfu4WWWc2V_XzcVJCyRoy680-KELqD/s1600-h/3253384706_1821b26258.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 133px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhONsdzT0l5IRjCzTvdzGPWKDEEDU5pHW9ekLqh1fIdt7_BFMg0b6t37vn6ZGJmFms3o9RlsirAf9cty_d9yjgkS3qrpMntekcYRcbi4n8YXXnT2NBfu4WWWc2V_XzcVJCyRoy680-KELqD/s200/3253384706_1821b26258.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5316068106968705522" border="0"></a>TED is one of the Geekiest conferences of the year and always a bit of a marathon of cerebral stimulation. Previous years had not had a LGBT(Q) gathering. This year in Longbeach Tom Rielly organized a dinner for all the gay geeks and world changers. It was a great group but something tells me there were a lot of other Gay/geeks who were not present. Next year we will be organizing something really special so if you are attending (either Palm Springs or Long Beach) please be sure to check the "Gay" attribute in your profile...or just tweet @fagadget.<br /><br />For those who don't know Tom...Here he is: <a href="http://www.ted.com/talks/view/id/114">Tom 2006<br /></a><br /><br /><br /><br />Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7233315343481926513.post-1644689595572973172009-03-22T06:05:00.000-07:002009-03-22T17:44:53.356-07:00Twitter + Gay = tworgies? twitchiness? or tweetatwink?<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJBZS4pNvkttIXEbSu3nSExrnSuLcR8b0ujloICuFuIQqtOOQtUh_0-EczSiE0XvksItz8bAEBULmGRJhYs3GhdiYnCqNLXJqYgCcn8efHmf_mde02Wz_UMnVLw45jAQUPjMNwqvnUWLUL/s1600-h/Picture+4.png"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 158px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJBZS4pNvkttIXEbSu3nSExrnSuLcR8b0ujloICuFuIQqtOOQtUh_0-EczSiE0XvksItz8bAEBULmGRJhYs3GhdiYnCqNLXJqYgCcn8efHmf_mde02Wz_UMnVLw45jAQUPjMNwqvnUWLUL/s200/Picture+4.png" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5316057065050120306" border="0" /></a><br />Gays are incredibly well connected, quick witted and love sharing their point of view with anyone who will listen. Twitter really should be the social network of choice. Even the vocabulary for twitter is gay. 'Twittering', 'Tweet', 'tweet up' - is there a queen out there that doesn't like the idea of 'followers'. I've looked at the numbers and the gays still have not adopted the gayest social tool out there.<br /><br />So, here's a quick gay guide to twitter.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">What is twitter?</span><br /><br />1) It's free. All you have to do is register at www.twitter.com and you are given a twitter page.<br />2) You fill out a profile - make it a good picture. The competition out there is weak.<br />3) Start typing short, sharp, pithy comments (140 characters or less) that are broadcast to all your 'followers'<br />4) Depending how witty, interesting and cute you are in your picture, people will 'follow' you (it's just like the gay world)<br />5) Decide who you want to 'follow' by going to 'find people'. Import names from your email to see if any of your friends are there or invite the ones who are not. When you choose to 'follow' someone you get to know everything they are up to and everything they are thinking, so choose carefully. 'Over- Following' could feel a bit like attending a gay Turrets sufferers event.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Some interesting features:</span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Replies</span><br />If you put the '@' symbol in front of someone's name e.g.@fagadget this message goes to their 'replies', folder but everyone sees it. So, it's like replying to someone so loudly that everyone in the room hears you.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Direct</span><br />If your want to reply to an individual personally, without everyone hearing, simply put a 'd' in front of the name, replacing the '@' (e.g. d fagadget).<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Search<br /></span>If you go to the search bar and type in any subject you can see who is talking about it and what they are saying. Some common themes are already identified by the community as good topics to search. These have a '#' in front of them and are known as <a href="http://hashtags.org/">hashtags</a>. e.g. #gay #gay_teen_hackers . <span>(maybe we need #hashfags)</span><span style="font-weight: bold;">.<br /><br />Twitpics<br /></span>You can share picture with your followers using a service called <a href="http://twitpic.com/">twitpic</a><br />You simply sign in with your twitter name to register and can then send pictures of whatever you want to all your followers. <span style="font-weight: bold;"><br /><br />Posting links<br /></span>You can post links in your twitter account but the longer links take up a lot of characters. There are many tools that let you post links really easily to your twitter account. My favorite is <a href="http://bit.ly/">bit.ly</a> This lets you post directly to your twitter account. If you want to see pages that are getting shared most on twitter go to <a href="http://twitturly.com/">Twitturly</a>.<span style="font-weight: bold;"><br /><br />Twinfluence<br /></span>By counting how many followers you and your followers have you can work out who has the most influence on Twitter. A site called <a href="http://twinfluence.com/">Twinfluence</a> ranks people based on their overall influence and the sister site <a href="http://www.twitseeker.com/">Twitseeker</a> can measure this by subject matter<br /><br />Check out other tools (there's new ones every day) at:<br /><a href="http://mashable.com/category/twitter-lists/">Mashable Twitter list </a>or <a href="http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2009/03/17/99-essential-twitter-tools-and-applications/">Smashing 99 twitter tools</a><br /><br />Please use #fagadget and @fagadgetUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0
